Ratan Naval Tata

Ratan Naval Tata, KBE, is an Indian businessman who became chairman of the Tata Group, a Mumbai-based conglomerate. He is a member of the prominent Tata family of Indian industrialists and philanthropists.
Born: December 28, 1937 (age 75), Mumbai
Nationality: Indian
Education: Harvard Business School, Cornell University, Harvard University, More
Awards: Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan
Siblings: Noel Tata

Ratan Tata is set to retire on Friday after 21 years as the group Chairman of the diversified conglomerate Tata Group. He has been responsible for making Tata Group a $ 100 billion empire. When he took over in 1991, the group had a revenue of about Rs 14,000 crore.
In March 1991, JRD Tata, an icon of the Indian industry, stepped down as the Tata Group Chairman to make way for a 54-year-old handsome, tall, over 6 feet, Cornell architecture graduate with the same illustrious surname, Tata.
Ratan Tata had left India at the age of 15 and returned 10 years later in 1962 to join the Tata group - working in the group's ailing textile mills, in the furnaces of Jamshedpur, reviving Nelco and 29 years later taking over as chairman.
Former Telecom Minister Arun Shourie says, "I remember that 20 to 25 years ago the Tatas were a collection of fiefdoms. These were very good people, but they were powers in their own right. Mr Darbari Seth was a formidable figure. Mr Rusi Modi, Mr Nani Pankhiwalia, these were wonderful people, but this was not a group. Ratan Tata slowly changed that or rather rapidly changed that nature of the group by bringing in persons of his own age group."
Those who know him describe him as a pioneer, a visionary and a leader passionate about technology. Ratan Tata proved that when he introduced the first 'made by India' car - the Indica and 11 years later the people's car - the Rs 1 lakh Nano.
But the fear of failure has never stopped Tata from giving his best. In an interview in 2007 he said, "I'm the one who took the big risks. You have to have a belief and see it to the end."

sachin tendulkar

Born April 24, 1973, Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra

Current age 39 years 244 days

Major teams India, Asia XI, Mumbai, Mumbai Indians, Yorkshire

    Nickname Tendlya, Little Master

    Playing role Top-order batsman

    Batting style Right-hand bat

Bowling style Right-arm offbreak, Legbreak googly

    Height 5 ft 5 in

    Education Sharadashram Vidyamandir School

In a nutshell Perhaps the most complete batsman and the most worshipped cricketer in the world,
Tendulkar holds just about every batting record worth owning in the game, including those for most
runs and hundreds in Tests and ODIs, and most international runs.

Sachin Tendulkar has been the most complete batsman of his time, the most prolific runmaker of all time, and arguably the biggest cricket icon the game has ever known. His batting is based on the purest principles: perfect balance, economy of movement, precision in stroke-making, and that intangible quality given only to geniuses: anticipation. If he doesn't have a signature stroke - the upright, back-foot punch comes close - it is because he is equally proficient at each of the full range of orthodox shots (and plenty of improvised ones as well) and can pull them out at will.

There are no apparent weaknesses in Tendulkar's game. He can score all around the wicket, off both front foot and back, can tune his technique to suit every condition, temper his game to suit every situation, and has made runs in all parts of the world in all conditions.

Some of his finest performances have come against Australia, the overwhelmingly dominant team of his era. His century as a 19-year-old on a lightning-fast pitch at the WACA is considered one of the best innings ever to have been played in Australia. A few years later he received the ultimate compliment from the ultimate batsman: Don Bradman confided to his wife that Tendulkar reminded him of himself.

Blessed with the keenest of cricket minds, and armed with a loathing for losing, Tendulkar set about doing what it took to become one of the best batsmen in the world. His greatness was established early: he was only 16 when he made his Test debut. He was hit on the mouth by Waqar Younis but continued to bat, in a blood-soaked shirt. His first Test hundred, a match-saving one at Old Trafford, came when he was 17, and he had 16 Test hundreds before he turned 25. In 2000 he became the first batsman to have scored 50 international hundreds, in 2008 he passed Brian Lara as the leading Test run-scorer, and in the years after, he went past 13,000 Test runs 30,000 international runs, and 50 Test hundreds.

He currently holds the record for most hundreds in both Tests and ODIs - remarkable, considering he didn't score his first ODI hundred till his 79th match. Incredibly, he retains a divine enthusiasm for the game, and he seems to be untouched by age: at 36 years and 306 days he broke a 40-year-old barrier by scoring the first double-century in one-day cricket. In 2012, when just one month short of his 39th birthday, he became the first player to score 100 international centuries, which like Bradman's batting average, could be a mark that lasts for ever.

Tendulkar's considerable achievements seem greater still when looked at in the light of the burden of expectations he has had to bear from his adoring but somewhat unreasonable followers, who have been prone to regard anything less than a hundred in each innings as a failure. The aura may have dimmed, if only slightly, as the years on the international circuit have taken their toll on the body, but Tendulkar remains, by a distance, the most worshipped cricketer in the world.

Exit polls predict Narendra Modi's sweeping hat-trick

                                                        Narendra Modi

Led by Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP is headed for an impressive hat-trick in Gujarat while the Congress is set to suffer a humiliating defeat. All surveys gave Modi a massive victory, even better than his 2007 tally of 117 in a House of 182 seats.

Exit polls carried out by ABP News-Nielsen predicted BJP to get 126 seats while Congress will get 50 seats, a drop of nine from their 59 in 2007. The newly formed GPP of the former Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel will get only two seats while others may have four. But vote share for both the national parties are likely to drop. The BJP's vote share is predicted to be 45 per cent, down from 49 per cent in 2007 and Congress' share is expected to come down to 36 per cent from 38 per cent.

C-Voter for Times Now predicted 119 to 129 seats for BJP while Congress is projected to win between 49 and 59 seats out of the total 182 seats. The News 24 channel showed that BJP is likely to get 140 as the party is expected to get 46 per cent of the total vote share. The poll carried out by Chanakya for the channel projected Congress to get 40 seats, 19 short of 59 it won in 2007 polls.

Headlines Today projected BJP to get between 118 and 128 seats while Congress is likely to win in 50 to 56 seats with 37 per cent vote share. C-Voter predicted a vote share of 46 per cent for BJP against 37 per cent for Congress while Chanakya said BJP is likely to get 50 per cent vote share against 35 per cent of Congress.

In Himachal Pradesh, C-Voter predicted 30 to 38 seats for Congress while BJP is likely to get 27 to 35 seats in the 68-member Assembly. Chanakya predicted Congress to win in 40 seats in Himachal while they said BJP is likely to win in 23 seats.

The Headlines Today predicted that the BJP vote share will go down to 45 per cent from 49 per cent in 2007. The channel said that the Gujarat Parivartan Party likely to make inroads in Gujarat, but not enough to topple the Modi Government and Keshubhai Patel failed to garner Leuva Patel votes. While 24 per cent Leuva Patel votes could end up with the Congress, Keshubhai's party is projected to poll 22 per cent of Leuva Patel votes.

According to Headlines Today, 10 per cent Muslims voted for Narendra Modi and 86 per cent voted for

the Congress.

The BJP vote share in Saurashtra could be 42 per cent down from 48 per cent. Congress vote share could be down by 4 per cent from 37 to 33 per cent. The big picture in Saurashtra: BJP between 36-38, Congress 7-9, GPP 1-2. The Keshubhai factor did not work. He cut into Congress votes. The  Headlines Today conducted the post-poll survey across 36 constituencies.

The post-poll survey conducted in Gujarat by CSDS for CNN-IBN and The Week was  restricted to just the first phase of polling which took place on December 13 in 87 seats out of the 182. The seat projection showed that BJP was far ahead with 53-63 in the first phase while the Congress will trail far behind with only 19-27 seats.

Even the vote percentage shows a similar pattern with the BJP set to garner 45 per cent, the Congress 33 per cent and others could get the remaining 22. Among the others former Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel's Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) is likely to corner 12 per cent of the votes.

According to an official statement issued by The Ravi Shankar Foundation, the meastro
"suffered from upper-respiratory and heart issues over the past year and underwent heart-valve replacement surgery last Thursday.
Though the surgery was successful, recovery proved too difficult for the 92-year-old musician."

"It is with heavy hearts we write to inform you that Pandit Ravi Shankar, husband, father, and musical soul, passed away today,
" his wife and daughter, Sukanya and Anoushka Shankar, said in a joint statement.

As you all know, his health has been fragile for the past several years and on Thursday he underwent a surgery that could have potentially given him a new lease of life.

"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the surgeons and doctors taking care of him, his body was not able to withstand the strain of the surgery. We were at his side when he passed away," the joint statement said.

"We know that you all feel our loss with us, and we thank you for all of your prayers and good wishes through this difficult time. Although it is a time for sorrow and sadness, it is also a time for all of us to give thanks and to be grateful that we were able to have him as a part of our lives. His spirit and his legacy will live on forever in our hearts and in his music," they said in their joint statement.

The sitar exponent, perhaps could be called India`s musical ambassador and was responsible for making Indian classical music popular in the West. He had collaborated with several international artists including George Harrison of ‘The Beatles’ which had garnered him fame and adulation all over the world.

Last week, the maestro had wished to speak to superstar Amitabh Bachchan. The actor on his blog had written, " Strangely, and for the first time, I had a call from the house of the great sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. His wife Sukanya ji wanted to talk to me to get me to talk to Ravi Shankar ji, because he had expressed a desire to speak with me. He has been unwell she informed me and was going in for a surgery on Thursday. They are in California, USA."

"This has been a most unusual occurrence. We all know Pt Ravi Shankar, who doesn`t? But I must admit that even though we have met on a few occasions, his association with my Father, our association with his elder brother the great dance exponent Uday Shankar, my own association with his son and daughter in law, and with Uday Shankar ji`s actress daughter... This has been the first time ever, when such a request was made to me," the actor had written.

Panditji is survived by his wife Sukanya and musician daughters, sitar player Anushka Shankar, singer Norah Jones, 3 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

Dilip Kumar

                                              Dilip Kumar

Dilip Kumar is an Indian film actor. He debuted as an actor in the movie Jwar Bhata,
produced by Bombay Talkies. He is known as Tragedy King,
and was described as "the ultimate method actor" by Satyajit Ray.
Born: December 11, 1922 (age 89), Peshawar
Full name: Muhammed Yusuf Khan
Spouse: Asmaa (m. 1982), Saira Banu (m. 1966)
Awards: Filmfare Best Actor Award
Siblings: Nasir Khan, Ehsan Khan, Aslam Khan

Today, on December 11, arguably the finest film actor the subcontinent ever produced was born in Peshawar to Hindko-speaking Pathan parents. Fourth in a family of 12 children, he was named Yusuf Khan. Sometime in the late twenties, the family moved to Bombay, where his father Ghulam Sarwar Khan set up a fruit business.

A shy young man, Yusuf did a job or two to support the family since the business wasn’t doing well in the War years. However, fate had something exciting in store for the young man, who ran into Devika Rani, the reigning heroine and chief executive of Bombay Talkies. As it turned out, her greatest contribution to the Indian cinema was the discovery of a person who was destined to become a legend in his lifetime. She offered him a film actor’s job on what was then a princely salary of Rs 500 with the prospects of an annual increase of Rs 200.

Yusuf Khan, she felt, was not a name to go well with a romantic hero. Of the three names suggested to him – Jehangir, Vasudev and Dilip Kumar – he chose the last. This, he thought, was also appropriate for it would hide his new occupation from his conservative father, who loathed all ‘nautankwalas’, as he used to call those associated with the cinema.

The chance meeting with Devika Rani altered the course of Dilip Kumar’s life but more than that it changed the trend in acting from loud and theatrical to a natural style both in action and in speech. To quote a critic, “he lent a meditative resonance to film acting.”

Amitabh Bachchan, a great performer himself, says: “He is a milestone for every upcoming actor. We have all been influenced by his dedication and versatility.”

Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma, at DTFF the vice chairman introduced a short
1-minute AV which paid a tribute to the legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra.
Talking about the film festival a source told a website, "Once the movie started,

 Aamir Khan

Bollywood star Aamir Khan knows his latest release 'Talaash' does not cater to a universal audience,
but he is glad with the response it has received.
'Talaash' is not a universal film. There is a supernatural element in this film and it was a risky film to make.
Around 80 to 90 per cent of the audience liked the film," Aamir told reporters here Tuesday.
He says his next release 'Dhoom 3' is a universal project.
Aamir Khan, who plays a police officer in the movie, says 'Talaash' has a repeat value.
"Even kids will like that film. But 'Talaash' has got a different audience," said Aamir.
"But I am glad that the film has opened so well and is doing good business at the box office.
What made me really happy was that the emotion that I went through while shooting for the film,
even the audience went through the same emotion while watching it," he added.
amir, who plays a police officer in the movie, says 'Talaash' has a repeat value.
"I don't think that a suspense drama does not have any repeat value. In fact,
the audience is liking the film more when they are watching it for the second or third time.
The film has not got 100 percent positive response as many people may not like
the supernatural films, but 'Talaash' has repeat value," he said.
amir feels the movie will inspire filmmakers to push their creative boundaries.
"I am happy that the audience is liking this films. It is a very difficult film to make. When such film work at the box office,
it pushes the boundaries for the creative people to explore their talent," he said.
He says the team behind 'Talaash' is not planning a sequel as of now.
directed by Reema Kagti and penned by Zoya Akhtar, 'Talaash' also features Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor.
